Lifestlye Leadership Is Not Only About Winning

After the Australian Liberal Party lost the 2007 Federal Election, Peter Costello resigned as the Deputy Leader and set about writing his memoirs. When the book was completed and released the next year the key issue was the question of leadership. Why had the then Australian Prime Minister not resigned and allowed Costello to be the leader after twelve years as the Deputy?

Costello tells his side of the story. He writes of the agreement that he believed Howard had made with him, to step down. But in the end, he never could. After explaining the situation he writes:

"Leadership is not only about winning, it is knowing when to depart."

The situation with John Howard just shows how hard it is to give up the things that we believe are important. It’s hard to give up prominent positions, roles with profile or jobs with prestige.

We can only give these up when we know that life is more than temporary power and we see our lives in the bigger context of history and eternity. Faith in God helps give us this perspective.
