Lifestlye Easter - Darkness

When the writers of the story of Jesus recount the events of Good Friday they tell us that darkness covered the whole land. After that Jesus gives up his spirit on the cross and dies. The darkness was literal but it also represented what was occurring on that day. Jesus was surrounded by darkness. The darkness of being betrayed by Judas. The darkness of all his male friends deserting him. The darkness of excruciating pain and the darkness of carrying the sin of the world.

The Bible tells us that Jesus’ death was not just a moral example or the cruel death of an innocent man but it was a spiritual transaction where Jesus carried on himself the sin of the world, that is all of us.

The light that breaks out in the risen Jesus is preceded by the darkness of pain, betrayal, desertion and death. It is from the darkness that light breaks in, both then and now.
